Summer Fun Programs: Grades K-2

Wednesdays 1:00-2:00 pm



 

Common Pond Life- Discover pond creatures of Lake Katherine and hold them in your hand, use a magnifier and then go into the pond to explore some more!

Date: July 27


 

Creek Walk- It's summer at Lake Katherine, so come out and put on boots and splash about the waterfall.  Boots will be provided.  Wear clothes that can get wet.

Date: August 3


Flying Wild- Take a close-up look at birds.  We will be participating in several games and activities to better understand the food chain.  Also we will examine some strange behaviors of birds.

Insectigations- Learn the basics about "bugs", go on an insect hike, and make your own buzzing bug.

Summer Fun Programs: Grades 3-5

Wednesdays 3:00-4:00 pm


 

An Ant's Eye View- Through careful investigations and experiments we will determine which food choices are favored by ants and what the life stages of ants look like.  Children will assemble their own ant farm.  (Parents: ants should be released back at Lake Katherine some time before autumn.)

Thursdays 3:45-4:45 pm


Maize- Have fun with Illinois' number one grain--corn.  Learn how to make corn puddy and grind corn.  Sample various corn products and learn some "corny facts".

Spidermania- Hike through the preserve and hunt for spiders and their webs.  We will also make a "spiderish" project!

Foliage Friends- The autumn hunt is on!  Find a variety of fallen leaves and use your drawing skills and imagination to create a nature story book.

Seed Collages- Using Lake Katherine as our inspiration we will create a fall collage using a variety of seeds that we collect (some will be provided).

Date: November 10


1st Thanksgiving- Discover what it was like to be at the 1st Thanksgiving!  Make your own butter, eat traditional foods of that time period, and make your own pumpkin mash dessert.

Date: November 17


Pebble Trivets- Learn about rock tumbling.  See a demonstration of turning rough rocks into smooth stones.  Design your own trivet to take home using a variety of pebbles.

Date: December 1


Merry Mice- Where do mice go in the winter?  We will be discussing how mice survive in the winter months and look at their tracks and skulls.  Children will be creating an adorable mouse craft.

Date: December 8


Pines in the Forest- Hike outdoors to our conifer garden and look at various pines and evergreens.  Look at a variety of cones and discuss seed dispersal.  Create a pine cone door swag to take home.

Date: December 15


Snowshoeing- Take a hike outside using our snowshoes (snow or no snow) and then warm up inside with hot cocoa!

After School Programs: Grades 3-5
Wednesdays 3:45-4:45 pm


Water and Science- Learn the answer to "where does our drinking water come from?"  Perform various experiments in an attempt to purify Lake Katherine's water.  We will also make an edible aquifer.

Living Sustainably- Through games & activities learn what part you play in the environment.  In a fun way find out what "sustainability" is.

Date: September 14

Forest Studies- Explore trees using all 5 senses by way of games and activities.  Review parts of the tree and how trees are an important part of our environment.

Owls- Become a forensic scientist and dissect an owl pellet.  Listen to his eerie calls.  Understand through investigation what part the owl has in the food chain.

Peanut Pals- Using nuts, seeds, and twigs that we collect on our hike on the preserve, create whimsical characters that kids will go nutty after!
